Parents as Partners Handbook (Blog #2)

Link to Parents as Partners Handbook

The Parents as Partners handbook is very helpful and detailed about the procedures and processes involved with IDEA, 504, and IEP plans. The Six important principles of the IDEA are presented in the beginning of the handbook and reflect the intent and spirit of the law. The six principles are:

1. Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)
2. Appropriate evaluation
3. Individualized Education Program (IEP)
4. Least restrictive environment (LRE)
5. Parent and student participation in decision making
6. Procedural due process

The rest of the hand book goes over these principles in detail and the legal and school policies that must be followed. Specifically the section involving the IEP is very informative about who should be involved involved in the education of a child who qualifies for special services, when and who will be providing these services, what services will be provided, and specific attainable goals for the individual student. Pages 23-36 cover most of what parents and teachers should know about the IEP.
